Overview

Name: Daoism (also Taoism)
Founder: Laozi (Li Er)
Core Texts: Tao Te Ching, Zhuangzi
Origin Period: Spring and Autumn / Warring States Period (around 6th century BCE)
Core Philosophy: Following the Tao, Non-action (Wu Wei), Unity of Heaven and Humanity

Core Concepts

1. Tao (道 — The Way)

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name. — Tao Te Ching, Chapter 1

  • - The Tao is the origin and governing principle of all things in the universe
  • Formless and nameless, yet omnipresent and generative
  • Beyond language and concept — it can only be experienced, not fully described

2. De (德 — Virtue / Power)

  • - De is the manifestation of the Tao within all things
  • Represents the natural essence and inner quality of things
  • The highest good is like water — benefiting all things without contention

3. Wu Wei (无为 — Non-Action)

  • - Not doing nothing, but acting in harmony with nature without forced interference
  • In pursuit of learning, every day something is acquired. In pursuit of Tao, every day something is dropped.
  • Effective leadership flows naturally, like governing a large country as you would cook a small fish

4. Ziran (自然 — Naturalness)

  • - The Tao follows nature; nature is the ultimate model
  • Humans follow Earth, Earth follows Heaven, Heaven follows Tao, Tao follows its own nature
  • All things grow spontaneously without artificial interference

5. Yin and Yang (阴阳)

YinYang
Soft, still, dark, cold, feminineHard, active, bright, hot, masculine
Moon, water, night
Sun, fire, daytime |
  • - Yin and Yang are interdependent and mutually transformative, forming the unity of opposites
  • The Taijitu (Yin-Yang symbol) represents dynamic balance
